Physiotherapy for Arthritic Pain

Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis
These are the two main types of arthritis most commonly known as ’wear and tear’.

Osteoarthritis is where the cartilage between the bones gradually becomes thinner and may break away causing the bones to rub together, this causes the joints to become stiff and painful.

There are a number of reasons that can cause this type of arthritis:

Obesity - particularly in the knees
Jobs or activity that require a repetitive movement
Increasing of age - most common in the over 40’s
Any damage done to the joint from a sports injury/impact

Starting treatment as early as possible is important to reduce any further damage to the joints this includes:

Physiotherapy - physiotherapist can give advice on your lifestyle and work, your physio will also design an exercise programme to strengthen your muscles and mobilise your joints and also give you relaxation techniques.
Massage and acupuncture treatments can help with pain relief.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is when the body’s immune system attacks itself, this is causes pain, swelling, lack of mobility and can sometimes leave you feeling tired and unwell, cold weather can aggravate the symptoms.

The cause of this type of arthritis is a fault in the immune system from being run down or it can be hereditary.

Treatment for Rheumatoid arthritis includes:

Relaxation techniques for home help given by your physiotherapist.
Osteopathy - mobilisation and massage techniques and help to reduce the pain
